How Early Should You Book a Holiday Decorating Service in Durango?
Earlier than you think — and here’s why it matters
When people begin thinking about hiring a professional holiday decorating service in Durango, one question tends to surface early:
When should I reach out?
The honest answer is as early in the year as possible — ideally in the first quarter. That surprises most people. Not because the process is complicated, but because the work behind truly custom, elevated holiday design is far more involved than it appears from the outside. And by the time most homeowners start thinking about it, the window for the best possible experience is already closing.
The Misconception Most Homeowners Have
The most common assumption is that fall — October, maybe November — is the natural time to reach out to a holiday decorating service. After all, that’s when the holidays start to feel real. That’s when the to-do lists come out.
But it’s worth understanding the difference between two very different things: having someone install existing decorations, and creating a truly custom holiday design experience. The first can often happen in fall. The second cannot — at least not at the level it deserves.
For a designer working at a custom, luxury level, fall is not the beginning of the process. In many ways, it’s the end of it.
Holiday Design Begins Long Before the Holidays
There are many steps from planning, sourcing, production timelines, and installation schedules. And behind every detail, there is intention.
It begins with a consultation. When someone first reaches out about a custom Christmas decorating service in Durango, they often haven’t made a final decision yet — and that’s completely fine. Working with a professional holiday designer is a meaningful investment, and it deserves careful thought.
The consultation is the opportunity to talk through your home, your vision, the challenges you’ve faced in past years, and the feeling you’re hoping to create. From there, if you’d like to move forward, the designer develops a plan — a thoughtful design direction built specifically around your space. Because that work involves real time and expertise, there’s typically a design fee at that stage. It doesn’t commit you to anything beyond the plan itself. But it does mean the process has genuinely begun.
If everything feels right, a contract is developed, an estimate is finalized, and sourcing begins. And that’s where timing becomes critical.

What Most Homeowners Don’t Realize About the Industry
Before I entered this industry, I had no idea how far in advance the supply chain operates. It’s remarkable — and it changes everything about how you think about timing.
Wholesale suppliers begin planning their holiday lines roughly 18 months before the season. They develop samples and prototypes, then present them to designers and buyers at major wholesale Markets held each January — in Dallas, Atlanta, and Las Vegas. Designers attend in person, walking showroom floors, touching and evaluating products, making selections for their clients.
Orders must be placed by late February or early March. Suppliers use those pre-orders to determine what’s actually worth manufacturing — not everything shown at Market goes into production. Once orders are confirmed, manufacturing begins — typically overseas — and products arrive in designers’ hands in August or September, sometimes as late as early October.
From there, designers unpack, organize by client, and begin creating. Wreaths, garlands, centerpieces — many are handcrafted in advance so that installation day runs seamlessly.
That entire chain — from Market to your mantel — is why fall inquiries create real limitations for anyone seeking a truly elevated, custom holiday design for their mountain home.

What Happens When Someone Waits
The first year I worked with the Birmingham Country Club, I wasn’t brought on until April. By then, the wholesale showrooms had closed and the ordering windows had passed. Some ribbon could still be sourced if suppliers had leftover inventory from the prior year. But many of the most distinctive, elevated materials simply weren’t available. What I couldn’t find through my wholesale relationships had to come from what big box retailers had in stock. The designs were beautiful. But some of the materials weren’t ideal and certain elements were replaced in the years that followed.
It’s a bit like the old saying from my advertising career: Good, fast, cheap — pick two. Waiting doesn’t make a beautiful result impossible. It just changes what’s possible.
The other problem with waiting too long is availability. The reality is there can be high demand during a narrow window. That means calendars get fully booked quickly and the best installation dates may already filled.
What Booking Early Actually Gives You
Someone who reaches out early recognizes that truly custom Christmas decorating takes time. But they respect the process and know that it’s how they’ll get the best results. But the benefits go well beyond the design itself.
There is less stress — full stop. The difference between a client who began the process in February and one who reached out in October isn’t just reflected in the quality of the materials. It’s reflected in how the entire experience feels. One feels like a collaboration. The other feels like a race.
When there’s time to think, there’s time to get it right. Early clients experience more genuine back-and-forth — real conversations about what the home should feel like, what matters most, what they’ve always wanted but never quite achieved. The design that emerges from that kind of unhurried process is almost always more personal, more cohesive, and more deeply satisfying than one that had to be assembled under pressure.
There’s also something quieter at work: the relief of knowing it’s handled. For homeowners managing careers, families, businesses, and the hundred other things that fill a busy life, that peace of mind arrives well before the season does. The holidays become something to look forward to — not something to manage.
Early clients also secure their preferred installation dates. I work with a limited number of clients each season so that every home receives the attention it deserves. For vacation homeowners in Durango with flexibility, installation as early as Halloween or early November is entirely possible. But Thanksgiving week and the days leading up to it are the most in-demand installation dates of the season — and early December fills nearly as quickly. I typically complete installations by the first week of December, with rare exceptions through the tenth. Once those dates are gone, they’re gone.

My Ideal Timeline? Earlier Than Most People Think.
The earlier the better — because getting on my radar means getting into my thinking.
For homeowners considering a major transformation of their vacation home’s holiday design, reaching out a year in advance isn’t too early. It’s actually ideal. One of the best things a homeowner can do is schedule a consultation while their current decorations are still up. It gives me the chance to see what you have, understand what you love and what you don’t, and begin thinking about what a new direction could look like. Even taking photos during the holidays can be enormously helpful for future planning conversations.
Even more importantly, it means that when I walk the wholesale Markets in January, I’m not browsing to figure out what someone might like. I’m visiting suppliers with your home and general style direction already in mind — looking for the materials, textures, and details that feel right for your space. The actual design plan may very well be shaped by what I discover there. Seeing and touching merchandise in person is irreplaceable — it’s one of the most significant things a professional designer brings to the process, and it works best when there’s already a direction to build from.

If You’re Reading This in September or October
You’re not necessarily too late — but managing expectations is important.
If you have existing décor you love and a smaller space you’d like thoughtfully refreshed, there may be room to work you in. Many clients build toward a larger vision in stages, starting with one signature space and expanding over time. I sometimes have beautiful materials in stock that can create something genuinely special even within a tighter window.
A full whole-home overhaul is a different matter. That level of custom Christmas decorating for a mountain home — sourced specifically for your space, designed with intention from the ground up — simply requires more lead time than fall allows. I encourage everyone to reach out regardless of timing as sometimes cancelations create new openings and they can always join our VIP waitlist securing their spot for next year.
And if what you’re really looking for is someone to install a tree using décor you already own, that’s a perfectly reasonable need — but it may be better served by a decorator or household staff. What I do begins with a design vision. And a design vision, done well, takes time.

A Final Thought
The most memorable holiday homes — the ones that feel warm, effortless, cohesive, and deeply personal — are rarely the result of a last-minute decision. They take vision, sourcing, craftsmanship, and above all, they take time.
The holidays you’re imagining — the ones where everything feels beautiful, considered, and completely ready when you arrive at your Durango home — don’t happen by accident. They happen because someone started planning long before the season did.
If you’re beginning to think about next year, or even this year, I’d love to start that conversation.
